Jimadie Shah Othman, 30
Written Nash Rahman
I feel happy everytime my journalists were called a nasty name as a result of their writing. This proved that their writing has managed to rouse strong feelings from the readers.
In Malaysiakini, Jimadie Shah Othman is among those who has collected quite a few nasty labels from both sides of the political divide.
At one point, he has been called an "Umno agent", yet he was also described as someone who was against the idea of the PAS-Umno "unity government". However, I regard all the attack and the harsh criticism towards our chief reporter as a merit to his worth.
After all, it is part of his job as a journalist to report the events in an independent and fair manner. Jimadie has performed this very well.
In his two years in Malaysiakini, I find him to be humble and would make friends with all sorts of people. He also seemed to have never ceased to learn in the process.
So I find it rather odd to learn that he has a strong affection to the arts, especially creative writing. He rarely speaks about it. But if one is so keen to obsever the local literary scene, one would find that his works often get published in the newspapers.
I understand that he has been writing poetry, short-stories, stage plays and literary essays since 10 years ago. He tmade his name through his collection of poetry Mitos Sperma Amerika and the anthology of short stories 'Ngembara ke Utopia Republik Cinta Sesudah Letih Menjadi Lelaki.
Not long after he joined our newsroom in April 2008, we read of Jimadie winning the main price in the Kakiseni Playwriting Competition, which earn himself the RM10,000 prize.
But as usual, he did not make a big deal out of it and only shared the good news with a few associates.
In my 35 years in journalism, I have met a lot of writers who had the same background like Jimadie -- who became both a journalist and a man of letters at the same time.
In his image, I can picture the national laureate A Samad Said and journalist extraordinaire A Samad Ismail. I pray that one day Jimadie would receive the same accolades.
